The California Department of Logging (CDF)
has notified property owners in Mitchell Creek of their intention to log
Jackson Forest in this area. Twenty percent of the forest in this
area will be logged in two to two and one-half acre clearcuts.
The timber harvest plan is located in the area
south of Franklin Street and east of Mitchell Creek Road. The plan area has
not been logged since the early 1960s. The forest here grows slowly. Much
of the land is transitional pygmy, and even in the areas of better soil,
the canopy is only now reestablishing. A network of trails.
streams that support steelhead and possibly coho salmon spawning, and
mushroom grounds are to be found there.Neighbors are organizing to to communicate
local concerns to the managers of Jackson State Forest. For more
information, please call Ginny Rorby at 964-6810 or contact the Campaign to
Restore Jackson State Redwood Forest at 964-5800.
Jackson State Forest is your forest. Get to
know it. Defend it.
